Space Atacama takes as its base the small dusty, desert town of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. At an altitude of approximately 8000 feet, it sits on a high plateau on the northern edge of the Atacama Salt Flat, the 3rd largest in the world. Characterized by its clay streets and single story adobe structures, it has a population of about 4000. Despite its size, this tiny town in the middle of the desert attracts visitors from all over the world – mountaineers, adventurists, scientists, artists and photographers – who come in seek of its outstanding and unique natural surroundings. It is considered the archeological capital of the country, with a local museum housing thousands of relics from pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Atacama region.
